HAPPY NEW YEAR!<br />
And it does feel like a year since I posted last! But I am still here and painting too!<br />
I did my first public demo at our local art group in December. I actually had a lot of fun and the group was so nice...(they didn't throw tomatoes, so I guess that's good!)<br />
Here is a small painting similar to the one I did for the group demo.<br />

I am starting the year with something NEW!!!<br />
I am planning to do a weekly painting to auction on a wonderful art auction site.<br />
My husband says I can "try it" for 6 months (there's a small monthly fee to join)<br />
and if I sell something I can continue with the auction site!<br />
So here it goes!... and I can't believe I'm starting this on Friday the 13th!<br />
Maybe this will be "Lucky Friday the 13th!" haha!! (I have more faith than superstition!)<br />

<a href="http://eastcolony.com/">East Colony Fine art Gallery</a> is doing a fund raiser to help our local food bank. <br />
It begins tonight with Trolly Night...another free event here in Manchester. The trolly takes you to about 6-8 different galleries, art school, museums, where you can also get in for free from 5-8:00 pm.<br />
<br />
On top of all that our gallery is playing a "match game". Each artist has painted something to represent different local eateries. To obtain a game card and participate in this game you either can make a monetary donation OR bring in a canned good. ALL proceeds from the game will go to the food bank at the end of the month.<br />
.<br />
ON TOP OF THAT, we will be drawing 5 lucky winners to win gift certificates and art , just for participating in our match game!!! The Mach Game will continue throughout the month of NOVEMBER!<br />
So, if you can't make it tonight, please stop in during the month!<br />

The co-op gallery I am in, East Colony Fine Art Gallery, is planning a theme show where all the artists are doing a painting to represent a restaurant in the area (there are 25+restaurants participating!) On November 3rd there will be a trolly night from 5-8 and this will be the opening of this theme show called "Art A La Carte". It is a fund raiser for the local food bank. All art is for sale and gift certificates and more will be given away! The gallery is having a "match" game where you have to match the art work to the participating restaurant! Come and have FUN and help feed the hungry too!!!<br />

I am still here and was consumed this summer with sprint triathlons! I am NOT an athlete but try to stay in shape and I am especially not competitive!<br />
However, my very good friend and workout partner, Jennifer IS! We have been working out together for, I'm guessing, 10 years or so. She encourages me to keep going! (The triathlons were her idea)</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
This year Jennifer's oldest daughter (Alex) went off to college.<br />
A very sad turning point in Jen's life.<br />

I can't believe that summer has come to an end. I will finish it with my 3rd and final (for this year) sprint triathlon this Sunday. It has been a gorgeous summer to get outside and exercise instead of being in the gym. One benefit is to see and appreciate our country's beauty...much like the painting above!<br />
<br />
What does this mean for you??? Well.... I will be getting back to my painting and hope to be introducing some wonderful sale opportunities through artist auctions. I will keep you posted on this later.<br />

I hope you are all having a great summer! I went to a workshop last week with a wonderful artist, <a href="http://qiang-huang.blogspot.com/">Qiang Huang</a>, up in Putney, Vt. I had an awesome time learning about alla-prima (direct) painting.<br />
It's very different from what I normally do. But very fun! I also learned a little more about marketing....which is always a challenge. Especially when I would rather be painting. But in today's world of DYS's(Do It Yourself) we have to learn it! <br />

It's that time of year and I am preparing for an outdoor art show this week-end in Narragansett, RI.<br />
Whooooo! A lot of work for my first one of the season! I was up late last night packing the car. So much to remember....especially when you have to stay overnight! Here is the 2nd Manolia painting I did for the fundraiser.<br />
I have to say, how much I love the magnolia tree in front of our house! It's just unfortunate that it gives us such a short show of it's beauty! I think the blooms last about a week or two and a good rain always finishes it off with the ground being covered in white petals. <br />
I am happy that I was able to capture a glimpse of their sweet presence here in these paintings!<br />

Next Friday, June 17th, the night of the auction for the animal shelter should be fun.<br />

You start with a watercolor painting loosely painted. Once it is dried you start layering colored and textured papers, glued one small piece at a time, where ever you want within the painting. I have the Geisha and background almost done. You can see that I'm near the bottom of the Geisha by the tone change. Now you can see that I have begun to change the peonies that I mentioned in my previous post. What a huge improvement. I am excited to finish this painting now!!!<br />

As promised, here is more on the reason for the name of the painting...<br />
The Asian people have a lot of symbolic significance to things. For example, the peonies mean prosperity. The origins of the Geisha (as opposed to her current reputation) show that she is groomed to perform in the arts (music and story telling to name a couple) specifically for the wealthy.<br />
Both represent beauty and elegance. I have done the under-painting in the brown monochromatic color mix of half raw umber and half Burnt umber (Adding white to lighten the mixture where needed.) The whole thing starts to take shape based solely on tonal value, much like a black & white image only in sepia color instead. By mapping out values it helps to see where your contrasts are and how your eye travels around the painting.<br />

I had this stage of the painting done for quite some time and wasn't really thrilled with it. Sometimes I have to "live with" something for a while and figure out why I feel the way I do. As an artist we are always evolving ad growing (at least that's what we hope for and what's fun about art). And recently I figured out why it lost interest for me and was able to go back in and fix it! The problem? There were 2 round things next to each other and was not interesting at all. In case you are wondering...the white "round" thing in front was a type of peonies. As you will see in my next posting. I changed it to a different type of peonies.<br />

I let it dry over night and start my drawing as you can see above, It's a rough drawing with NO details. But picking this back up and working on this just before the Japan catastrophe. I decided to name this painting in honor of the Japanese people. They are so amazing with their quiet yet determined way of moving forward. Of course they will need lots of aid to pull them through this. Here's a painting I did as part of a challenge! The challenge was to do one square in 10 minutes and to repeat the exercise so that you have as many to fit on your canvas ...each square being only a couple of inches each. Here I used a 5x7 so it allowed for 4 strawberry images. This was a great exercise in simplifying and getting the important info down quickly! This is what I came up with. I have participated in a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triathlon">sprint triathlon</a> and know how challenging that one is. I can't even imagine doing a full Ironman! Here's a small painting I did a couple of years ago and made my Christmas cards out of an image taken of it. Speaking of Christmas cards...that is something that I've ended up sending out less of in the last few years. I've decided that I would send to the distant relatives and friends that I don't see all year (primarily due to distance) This year I didn't use any of my paintings but I found a card that had a road sign that read "JingleAllThe Way" And it reminded me of a song I wrote to the tune of Jingle Bells. Today I put color into the foreground and background and brought up my white in the cups. As you can see the painting is starting to take shape now that I am beginning to add color and to bring up these lights. My husband can’t understand why I paint these things….I can’t always give an answer, but for this one, I find the shapes (both positive and negative shapes) interesting! Part of the reason is because I wanted all the steps to go together as a continuation. I don't think I'll be able to do that unless I keep on the the same project and my very next posting is the next step. (this messes with my organizational side of my brain!) I have come to realize through this process of blogging that I like to jump around from project to project. But for now, I will try to stay on task with this one. <br />
Sometimes it's fun to work in series and I have wanted to do one with tea cups. Although I'm not sure it will become a series, here is the first tea cup painting. This is what I do as an under-painting. It is a monochromatic painting with a mix of raw umber, burnt umber and white.<br />

I have been wanting to do a painting with ballet slippers for a while now. The Gallery I am in has a theme show a couple of times a year. We have one starting on Thursday night called "Poetry & Art". Because I was determined to do this painting I went on a search for a poem to match it. Unfortunately, I was not happy with my results. I did a lot of work this year learning about how to do things on the computer with things like this blog, my website and an online store called Etsy. (Etsy is an ebay of sorts...but ONLY hand made artisan goods)It has been interesting and tiring at the same time!<br />

My daughter moved back home after living far away (about 18 hours drive) for the last 4 years! And she moved back with an additional dog....Bella! Our little Rosie (a mini schnauzer) is loving having a permanent resident canine friend! </div><div style="text-align: left;">We have had the hottest summer that I can ever remember. All of this has made it difficult to get back into painting gear. But it will start to shift soon. I absolutely love our New England seacoast! It's just so beautiful. It helped that the weather was gorgeous too! I had a few sales this week-end but what made the week-end even more sweet was that I won a wonderful and prestigious award on one of my paintings!It wasn't 'Best in Show' but I was told it was "next to it"! I was very honored and blessed to receive it!!! You may recall that in June I had gotten 1st place with this same painting in a local show! :)<br />

I love being at the beach in the early morning hours when no one else is around for miles. Although the beach is only about 30 minutes away, it's not something that happens too often. There's something so tranquil about hearing the waves rhythmically crashing and receding. Low tide gives the soft wet sand to walk on and while doing my quiet time I can also find discovery both within myself and around me with shells and things that have washed ashore.<br />

Every year I have to ask him to tell me the names of the flowers. They have two names usually...their formal name and then a nick name (usually something short) AND then he'll tell me additional names they may be known by! And he wonders why I can't remember the names! But, if I paint them I sometimes remember. I tell him my memory chip is full! He understands because he says when he feels that way there's a concern that IMPORTANT information might get pushed out to make room for the other stuff...and he might forget the names of his kids!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

This is a commission I did for some friends who lives here in NH. They gave this to their daughter as a wedding gift (This week). By personalizing the bench, it was a way so she will always remember with fondness her home stomping ground! She will be married this weekend!<br />
